So far the adoption rate of companies making their sites accessible via devices has been very slow. However, it is starting to pick up speed. Conduits is a software company making good products for the Pocket PC platform. So it is almost a given that they needed their Web site to work on Pocket PCs so people could download straight to their device any software they purchase. Hopefully this is a common sense wake up call. Read the press release at http://www.conduits.com/company_news.asp?pr20030127.html.

EVDO vs. WIFI

January 28, 2003 | Leave a Comment

Everyone has probably heard about 3G by now. Its the promise of having a wireless broadband connection, through phone or modem. My thought is that Qualcomm’s EVDO technology will be the first true 3G experience for the US. I have been working with Qualcomm on a number of EVDO projects over the last year. If you would like to read an approximation of what EVDO is and how it compares to WIFI, Alan Reiter has an interesting article at http://reiter.weblogger.com/2003/01/23 about the difference between the two.

SMS me!

January 17, 2003 | Leave a Comment

I’ve recently discovered that T-Mobile has re-enstated the email-to-sms service for their customers. Voicestream used to offer the service and T-Mobile disabled it for a short period of time. I don’t believe two way messaging outside of their network is available as of yet. Regardless, I will be building a form you’ll be able to use from my site to send me SMS messages. Stay tuned.

Nokia announces a free tool that will allow developers to write Java Apps to work on the Java OS on some Nokia phones. Looks really cool, its a standalone authoring environment or an IDE for other popular Java tools from Borland and Sun. Read more here.

January 8, 2003 | Leave a Comment

Macromedia has archived the keynotes from the DevCon conference. Apple was pretty exciting yesterday, but if you are still in the mood for a keynote, check out Macromedia.

The Consumer Electronics Show has started in Vegas. This is the big event each year where new gadgets and devices are unveiled. In typical fashion, the first day held some good demonstration including this new Pocket PC Phone Edition. More to come tomorrow.

Unfortunately I was not able to make it down to Devcon this year, however Macromedia has been posting a lot of the wrap up notes lately. The other day I saw they had posted the video archives of the keynotes, but now I can not find them. I was hoping to see Kevin Lynch or Rob Burgess show off our Devcon Pocket PC app. If anyone finds the link, send it my way. Regardless, this is a nice page full of Rich Internet Application content from the conference.

Very cool concept here. When you add a blog entry that contains a geographical locale, mark a spot on a map. Very cool free Web service.

One of the best sources on devices and gadgets, Gizmodo, puts together an end of year review. I would add a Pocket PC Phone Edition to their list. I carry mine with me everywhere I go.
