.mobi toplevel domains

Tim Berners-Lee has written an article about the recently proposed new Top Level Domains. He goes into detail about how .mobi is a bad idea. I wrote about this back when it was first introduced. I agree with Tim, the new domain segments users and isn’t very powerful anyway. Mobile devices come in a wide array of shapes and sizes, and even with a .mobi domain, content providers are still going to have to deploy a system for recognizing devices and their capabilities so as to deliver appropriately formatted content. What is the benefit of doing this at a .mobi level? Just do this detection at the main .com site and provide your users an easy way to access your content. Remembering .mobi will not become common practice. Thank you Tim for shedding some intelligence on this matter.
