Using bittorrent on fiber
April 20, 2007 | 4 Comments
I tried Bittorrent over a year ago to see how the experience was different than other P2P/sharing technologies. Of course the user experience is a little different in that the clients don’t have the library of torrent files you have to go searching for them, but overall the sharing process is the same. I didn’t find P2P all that useful. I don’t do illegal MP3s. Having individual tracks drives me crazy, I have to have the full album, it’s an OCD thing.
But, the other day I was looking for a live recording and found a torrent for it. I decided I would give it another shot. I downloaded Transmission for my client, and it was super easier to setup and downloading the live recording went pretty smoothly. HOWEVER, it was slow as hell. I can’t imagine trying to download a full length feature film, it would take days, if not weeks and I am on fiber. 3.3Kb/s sucks when you are used to fiber speeds.
Anyone working on a separate high speed Bittorrent network? The current network is already logging my downloads/uploads, why not track my bandwidth speed and at least notify me that certain torrent seeders offer high speeds. I can hear the whole digital divide argument now, but sorry for Bittorrent I find it painful to use like 14.4 dial-up. One has to marvel at iTunes.

listening to…

The most recent Sean Lennon. Good, mellow, sing-along stuff. Very much in the vein of his father’s solo efforts.
Also, Damien Rice. AMAZING singer-songwriter from my ancestor’s land of Ireland. Big fan of Damien. The new album has some punchy stuff compared to the all acoustic sounding first album. And Lisa Hannigan sounds amazing again as well, but apparently she is leaving the band. Bummer!

Barefoot hiring UI Developer
April 12, 2007 | Leave a Comment
The agency I work for, Barefoot, has just posted a position on 37Signals job board for an experience UI Developer.
–
Barefoot has an immediate opening for an experienced User Interface developer. Strong skills in XHMTL and CSS is a must. Significant experience in Javascript is a big plus. To be considered as a candidate, please submit at least 5 URLs for which you were either the only UI developer or at least the principal developer. No phone calls please.

So, all you CSS freaks, this is your dream job. Cool agency. Hip modern design. And you get to bring it to life. Not to mention the development staff is cool too (I’m a little biased). If you understand server-side programming, that is a bonus. If you know some Flash/Actionscript that is a big bonus as well. The big chunk is XHTML/CSS. We’re talking about browser compatibility, W3C standards, etc… We want to implement standards and if you know them and know how to code them, then we want you. We work with some amazing clients, including Miller Brewing Company, KnowledgeWorks Foundation, and many many other large and small companies. This is a cool position.

My friend Tim Baron and I entered a drawing that we both contributed to in a contest on Sam Hiti’s blog http://fistacuffs.blogspot.com/ . It’s a “wrestling” contest between drawn fighters. If you get a minute vote for our team, named Smash and Crush Mongers. It’s the one with a huge monkey and a dude’s head in a pot (WEST-FIRST ROUND-MATCH 2).

Go check this out, amazing drawings. Great blog concept.

Ars on barrier to mobile internet in US
April 4, 2007 | Leave a Comment
Ars Technica has a great article breaking down the current cost of mobile data through the major carriers in the US, and why the prices, along with pairing of certain devices, seems to be a major barrier to entry for mobile data usage in the US.
With the buzz of the iPhone and it’s Safari Web Browser, many are wondering what the cost is going to be. Or might not even know that using the internet on the iPhone is going to require data usage fees.
If you are interested in using your mobile for things like Calendar syncing, reading GMail, etc… check out the Ars article for good current numbers.
