Vimeo v5 launches

The Vimeo team has been hard at work on a new release. It’s a very big one. Completely new UI, many new features, still the same integrity. It’s very cool! If you are turned off by the big black hole that is YouTube, you’ll be turned on to know that internet video can be done right. I’ve never really gotten the whole YouTube thing. It seems to be an endless amount of copyrighted or worthless clips with little to no relevancy. It’s that relevancy that makes the difference to me and Vimeo adds that. Vimeo has much smarter social features built in. There is a sense of community rather than anonymity. And it is much more creative. If you haven’t checked it out, give it a try. There are some good people behind the site and really creative users. I guess I should also disclose that I helped with their Flash Video Player, so I am a little biased. But besides that, Vimeo gives a sense of meaning to publishing your own videos online, and I can’t think of another service that really does that. It’s kind of like Flickr, only for video. The new release is going to change my opinion on shooting video for sharing on the Web.
Congrats to the Vimeo team.
